It was a rainy Sunday last Lord’s Day, and despiote the weather, by God’s grace, GCEC welcomed its youngest covenant member, Shaniah Brielle Yam, with the sacrament of [infant] baptism.
Infant baptism is recognized in the Reformed church because we believe that children are part of the covenant and thus, the sign and seal of the covenant (in this case the waters of baptism) are applied to them. This doesn’t mean that the child is automatically saved but rather, through baptism, we confess as a church that the Lord declares the child as his. The church therefore has the responsibility to support and assist the parents of the baptized infant, to raise the child in Christ, with the confidence in the Spirit that child will someday come to saving faith (Heidelberg A&A 74). As well, we take hold of the promise of the Lord that he welcomes the little ones and blesses them (Matt. 19:14).
